Liam Rosenior’s watershed moment as Hull City face crucial Sunderland trip

The Tigers were the architects of their own downfall once again

By his own admission, Liam Rosenior is beginning to sound like a broken record as he continues to defend his Hull City players and their ever-growing list of errors. Again on Tuesday night, City found themselves in a position of strength at Birmingham City before conspiring to lose the game 2-1 and find themselves dumped out of the FA Cup.

Leading 1-0 at the break after Jason Lokilo’s first goal for the club, a much-changed and youthfully City side were deservedly in front at St Andrew’s, but a combination of goalkeeping errors and some fairly average decision-making in and around their own box saw Tony Mowbray’s Blues take full advantage.

For City and Rosenior, it represents a pivotal moment in the season. On Friday night, the Tigers are in the North East to face fellow promotion rivals Sunderland knowing defeat is not an option given their recent form. Critical errors have blighted their progress in recent weeks, and if it carries on, will end their season long before they’d have hoped for, and the head coach says there can be no more excuses.

“I have to manage the squad in the right way and to be fair when I did make the changes and Tyler (Morton) comes on and Ozan (Tufan) and Regan (Slater) we started to assert our dominance and control of the game again and yet again, we managed to somehow throw away what was a really comfortable position in the game for us. We managed to find a way to lose a game

“To be fair, fair play (to Birmingham). I think Birmingham in the second half, they stepped onto the game. I think Tyler Roberts made a big difference, I thought he was outstanding when he came on.

The frontman, who has rejected a new deal at Oakwell, is out of contract in the summer.

He scored his 16th goal of the season for the Reds in their 2-1 League One win over Carlisle on Tuesday evening to equal his tally from last term. It was his fourth goal in successive matches.

the 28-year-old has been linked with January moves to Championship trio Hull, Huddersfield and Cardiff City.

But Rosenior dismissed the link after his side’s 2-1 FA Cup exit at Birmingham, while it is understood that talk of interest from Huddersfield is also wide of the mark.

On whether City are in the market for Cole and have registered interest, Rosenior said: “No, we haven’t. I don’t know where that came from. At the moment, that one is new to me. I saw it on Sky Sports News on the TV, but that’s not anything to do with us.”

Meanwhile, Rosenior – currently without the services of Jean-Michael Seri, Jaden Philogene, Liam Delap, Aaron Connolly and Ruben Vinagre – says it is unlikely that he will bring in any new signings before Friday’s trip to Sunderland.
