20-goal ex-Arsenal striker in talks to play in English 14th tier

Former Gunner Eduardo da Silva has confirmed he’s held talks with Gillingham Town over registering him for league matches in England’s 14th tier.

Ex-Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva is an ambassador for Gillingham Town, who play in the Kent County Football League.

As a Division Three Central & East team, Gillingham Town play in the 14th tier of English football, alongside the likes of Lokomotiv Canterbury and New Romney Reserves.

But Eduardo, who is currently 40 and has been retired from professional football since 2018, is now talking about a comeback.

The striker has already agreed to take part in a charity game, and he’s not ruling out a full-time comeback.

“We’ve even discussed registering me to play in the league,” Eduardo said.

“I want to play because even though I am retired I still play football with my friends in Brazil.”

This is the latest of a few Arsenal connections for Gillingham Town in recent years.

Back in 2019, Gilberto Silva’s teenage son (Gilberto Silva Jr.) signed for Gillingham Town and played some games with the side.

A year later, former Gunner Denilson agreed to become an ambassador for the team.

It would be quite something to see Eduardo back in action in the lower leagues, though nothing is confirmed quite yet.

Eduardo played 67 times for Arsenal, scoring 20 and assisting a further 17. He averaged a goal or assist every 99 minutes for the Gunners in all competitions.
