Tom Holmes undergoing Luton Town medical today as double deal finalised

Reading defender Tom Holmes is undergoing a medical at Luton Town on Monday (15 January) ahead of his move to the Premier League club, sources have told Football Insider.

Luton have agreed a double deal with crisis club Reading for Holmes and Nelson Abbey as they look to bolster their defensive options this month.

The Hatters are prepared to sign Holmes now and then loan the 23-year-old back to the League One side for the remainder of the season.

Reading manager Ruben Selles says offers for defenders Holmes and Abbey have been accepted by the troubled League One club.

Reading are in dire straits financially and sit in the League One relegation zone, which has allowed Luton to swoop in and seal a deal for the defender this month.

The 23-year-old has made just 12 appearances across all competitions this season and has also played for the Royals’ Under-21 side.

He has made 129 appearances in total for the Berkshire club after coming through the ranks, scoring one and assisting two.

Most of those outings came in the Championship – before Reading’s relegation from the second tier at the end of last season.

Holmes is under contract at the crisis club until June 2025.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old centre-back Abbey has been a regular in Ruben Selles’ side this term – notching 26 appearances across all competitions and even wearing the captain’s armband for a handful of games.

He also came through the ranks at Reading and has racked up 31 games in all competitions for his boyhood club.

Abbey’s contract is currently set to expire at the end of this season

Luton sit 18th in the Premier League table following their 1-1 draw away at Burnley on Friday (12 January).

Rob Edwards’ side are one point from safety ahead of their next league clash against Brighton on 30 January.
