Ipswich Town Eye Move For 21-Year-Old
Ipswich Town are said to be eyeing a move for Hertha Berlin striker Derry Scherhant, according to a report from Football Insider.
Town are not alone in their interest, with fellow Championship club West Bromwich Albion also monitoring the 21-year-old. Blackburn Rovers have also shown interest in the Berlin striker in the past, but their interest was not successful. However, English clubs have clearly kept him on their radar.
Ipswich Manager Kieran McKenna is looking to be active in the transfer window to boost their Premier League promotion chances. Brighton & Hove Albion winger Jeremy Sarmiento has already been signed on loan, but the former Manchester United coach is aiming to get some more players over the line.
Scherhant appeared in the Bundesliga last season for Hertha before relegation to the second division. He bagged his first Bundesliga goal last season for Hertha, further adding an assist against Borussia Monchengladbach. This season, Scherhant has scored six goals in the Bundesliga 2, and his team sits seventh in the table.
The former Viktoria Berlin striker has a market value of £688k, according to TransferMarkt, but unknown whether the clubs will attempt to sign the German on loan or whether the deal will be a permanent one. Blackburn’s failed attempts in the past for the player were loan deals, but both were rejected.
Ipswich currently sit second in the Championship, three points ahead of Southampton in third place. The Baggies are fifth but are currently the second-lowest scorers in the top ten. The stats would suggest Carlos Coberan and his side might need the goals a little bit more than Ipswich, but that won’t stop the Tractor Boys from trying to win the race for the forward.
Scherhant is a talented forward, and a move to the Championship would doubtless be attractive, especially for a team chasing a Premier League spot. West Brom, at present, given their league position, may not be able to offer the same.
However, the Baggies are short of options up top, with Daryl Dike just returning from a long-term injury. Carlos Coberan’s side has also shown interest in Fenerbache striker Umut Nayir, but a deal is yet to be finalised for the Turkish forward. That could mean more likelihood of regular game time for the 21-year-old.
