Stoke City identify ‘type and what person’ in patient January striker transfer hunt

Steven Schumacher says Stoke City have identified ‘the type of player and what person’ they want to add to their strike depart in the January transfer window – but will have to be patient to get a more complicated deal over the line.

Stoke have brought in two loan signings so far this month, goalkeeper Daniel Iversen from Leicester and midfielder Luke Cundle from Wolves, having played under Schumacher at Plymouth Argyle in the first half of the season. There is still a to-do list in the final three weeks of the window and Schumacher has gone on the record about hoping to bolster up front.

“We hope so,” he said this afternoon when asked if the hunt was progressing. “These things take time, especially with forward players – you find it’s complicated with the way that deals work but I think we’re moving in the right direction. We know what type of player and what person we would like to bring in, it just takes a bit of time for that process to take place.

Steven Schumacher has started life at Stoke City a win and three draws in his first four matches as head coach.

I’m pleased with the two players we’ve brought in so far. Daniel Iversen has done really well and we’ve seen Luke Cundle in training this week. I know him really well anyway and he’s going to bring something to the team, for sure, and hopefully it’s not the last signing we bring in.”

Exits have not been ruled out this month too although, at the moment, none has been lined up.

Schumacher said: “That’s potentially out there but at this moment of time because the squad hasn’t been at full strength, it hasn’t been a major concern of mine to move people out. So far lads are not knocking on my door thinking their game time is going to be limited because the squad has been thin.
