Gillingham’s Matty Macarthur makes scoring debut for National South side Dartford against Weston-super-Mare
Gillingham’s Matty Macarthur enjoyed an impressive debut with loan club Dartford in National South.
The attacking midfielder found the top corner from the edge of the box for The Darts on Saturday to give them a 27th minute lead against Weston-super-Mare.
Moments after his opener he also played in teammate Maxwell Statham for a chance after good footwork down the right flank and during a thrilling spell he also crashed a volley off the woodwork.
Macarthur was substituted after 84 minutes.
Darts twice took the lead in the match but had to make do with a point in a 2-2 draw after conceding a second in the 97th minute.
Coach Martin Tyler, speaking about their the new signing said: “He certainly gave us a different dimension.
“He got a goal and hit the post and generally occupied the opposition on a very difficult pitch for a winger, we’re delighted with that.”
Macarthur, 19, has joined the Darts on loan until February 3, one of several ‘B Team’ players to have gone out for experience.
He signed his first professional contract with the Gills in the summer and has made three senior appearances, all in the EFL Trophy. He’s also been named on the bench twice for the Gills in League 2 this season.
