Should the 49ers Sign Carson Wentz this Offseason?

Wentz just spent the season with the Rams, so he knows a version of the 49ers’ offensive system. And he went to the same school as Trey Lance, so the 49ers should know how to use Wentz

The 49ers have their starting quarterback for the foreseeable future and his name is Brock Purdy.

But they also need a backup quarterback, and their current backup is Sam Darnold, who will be a free agent this offseason. This past Sunday, he got an opportunity to start against the Rams and audition for a return to the 49ers. And he was decent, but not as good as the other backup quarterback who played in that game — Carson Wentz. He will be a free agent this offseason, too.

So should the 49ers sign Wentz instead of Darnold?

If the choice comes down to those two, the 49ers should go with Wentz, who’s better than Darnold. Plus, Wentz is 4-0 in his career against the 49ers. So if they sign him, they can ensure he won’t beat them next season if he signs and plays elsewhere. Imagine if he signs with the Seahawks. That would not be ideal for the 49ers. And they can prevent him from re-signing in the division simply by signing him themselves.

Unlike Darnold, Wentz has a winning record as a starting quarterback. That doesn’t mean he should start anymore — he shouldn’t. He’s a backup. But he’s a backup who can win a stretch of games if the starting quarterback gets injured. Darnold doesn’t seem to be that kind of backup. Darnold is the type who plays well at first until he fumbles or throws an interception or finds another way to hurt himself.

Why not give him a shot?
