Phillies One Of ‘Likeliest Destinations’ For Cy Young Winner
Officially in the back-half of the offseason, the Philadelphia Phillies have made only one major move so far. Re-signing Aaron Nola was the goal and was really the only thing the front office needed to do to ensure they could continue competing for World Series titles. But with some elite starting pitchers still available on the market, there has been some reports the Phillies might not be done adding other pieces, despite their high payroll.
Will Leitch of MLB.com lists his most likely destinations for 2023 Cy Young winner Blake Snell and included Philadelphia in this group. “He fits the veteran profile, even if he doesn’t fit the old Veterans Stadium profile of your ideal Phillies fan favorite. But Snell, Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola would make quite a top three come October,” he writes. There’s no doubt adding Snell to this rotation would give them one of the best in baseball, but with so many question marks surrounding the lefty, would this move really be something they’d consider?
With ultra-aggressive Dave Dombrowski in charge, the Phillies have been in the running for tons of top names the past few years and have landed many of them. Perhaps that’s why they have been constantly linked to free agents this cycle, despite not really needing anything after re-signing Nola. Out of his 11 teams listed, Leitch has Philadelphia as his eighth most likely team to sign Snell. That’s not high confidence the Phillies would actually get something done, and considering the price tag he comes with, it’s unlikely they are really considering the Cy Young winner.
Of course, Dombrowski could surprise everyone and sign the best available starter, but at this point in time, it seems like Philadelphia is content with how their roster is currently constructed.
