‘Been telling us’… Phil Hay says he has been told Leeds United would ‘like’ to sign £16m PL defender
Leeds United do not appear to be in a major rush regarding signings with the first week of the window having passed.
Daniel Farke said in his press conference on Friday that Leeds will not fall asleep in the market this month but there is ‘no emergency’, despite having sent Djed Spence back to Tottenham Hotspur.
Spence had been on a season-long-loan at Elland Road but Leeds opted to end it early, with Farke explaining the reasons behind the decision at the end of last week.
Ultimately, though, Leeds will not want to leave themselves weaker at the end of the window than what they started it. There have been links to right-backs, with Burnley’s Connor Roberts the strongest.
And according to Phil Hay, who was speaking on the latest episode of the Square Ball Podcast, Leeds are big fans of Nottingham Forest’s Neco Williams, but a deal could be tough to do.
Leeds unlikely to sign Williams
He said: “A few people have been telling us that they like Neco Williams at Forest as well but I don’t think there is any scope for Forest letting him out. He seems to be well in the plans of Nuno. It’s very, very quiet on the transfer front for Leeds at the moment.”
Williams is a player Leeds were interested in back in the summer when they were in search of a right-back, but opted to for Spence after missing out on Max Aarons to Bournemouth.
The 22-year-old – who Forest signed for £16 million in the summer of 2022 – had looked likely to leave on loan this month, but the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo looks to have changed that.
All be it only once from the start, Williams has featured in all four matches under Nuno, despite the plethora of options Forest have at right-back in Gonzalo Montiel, Serge Aurier and even Ola Aina.
Williams would be the ideal signing for Leeds considering he can play both right and left-back comfortably, but at this stage, it is looking like a very difficult deal to do.
