New England Could Reunite Former OC Josh McDaniels With Bill Belichick If Legendary Coach Stays With Pats
On Monday night, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reported that McDaniels could return to the Patriots this offseason if Bill Belichick remains as head coach.
McDaniels was fired by the Las Vegas Raiders in early November after less than two years as the franchise’s head coach.
“Part of that plan will include a meeting with former Patriots coordinator Josh McDaniels, who is considered a comeback candidate, a source close to the situation said.”
Howe added that Belichick and Kraft met Monday to discuss the future of the franchise and will meet again. The news about McDaniels came a day after the Patriots coordinator attended New England’s home loss to the New York Jets.
It’s unclear what McDaniels’ renewal meeting will mean for Bill O’Brien, the Patriots’ current offensive coordinator. The eyes of the NFL world are on New England. Because there is a possibility that the Patriots will part ways with legendary coach Bill Belichick.
Anything is possible after a 4-13 season in which Belichick tied the NFL record for most losses by a head coach. It includes Belichick returning for his 25th season.
The 71-year-old is scheduled to meet with team owner Robert Kraft this week to discuss his future. It’s clear that if Belichick wants to stay with the Patriots, things will have to change.
According to The Athletic, Josh McDaniels is considered a candidate to return to New England if Belichick remains as head coach
McDaniels, who was the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders for the past season and a half, was fired earlier this year after a 3-5 start. The Patriots offense has struggled since McDaniels took the job in Vegas.
It remains to be seen whether Bill Belichick will return to the New England Patriots in 2024, but if he does, he could reportedly bring back a household name.
Former Patriots offensive lineman Josh McDaniels is considered eligible to return to New England if Belichick remains head coach, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic.
McDaniels was in his second season as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, but he was fired after just eight games in 2023. However, he became New England’s top receiver in two seasons.
The Patriots could certainly use an offensive boost after going 12-22 over the past two seasons. Former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia was in charge of the offense in 2022, while Bill O’Brien filled the position this season.
The Patriots ranked 17th in the league in points per game in 2022 and wereied for last with the Carolina Panthers last season. Perhaps McDaniels is responsible for this new direction.
