Yankees’ Top Prospect Floated As Possible Trade Candidate For Superstar Pitcher Demands
The New York Yankees have been in trade rumors for weeks at this point. The free agent starting pitching market has been painfully slow this offseason. Initially, two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani hung up the market as he made his decision. Young star Yoshinobu Yamamoto was next up and eventually made his free-agent decision as well. There still are some stars available, but the free agent process has been extremely slow. New York still could land someone like Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery but may end up turning to the trade market instead.
The Yankees have been linked to Chicago White Sox ace Dylan Cease numerous times, and it seems like a move could be a possibility. Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter compiled a list of realistic trade proposals from each team that has been mentioned as a fit for Cease and mentioned top prospect Spencer Jones as a trade candidate. “Trade Proposal: Yankees acquire (right-handed pitcher) Dylan Cease in exchange for (outfielder) Spencer Jones, (right-handed pitcher) Will Warren, (catcher/first baseman) Ben Rice, (third baseman) Tyler Hardman, (left-handed pitcher) Edgar Barclay,” Reuter said. “Assuming Jasson Domínguez is off-limits in trade talks and Chase Hampton will also be a non-starter after fellow top pitching prospect Drew Thorpe was moved in the Juan Soto trade, outfielders Spencer Jones and Everson Pereira are the most logical potential centerpieces in a Cease deal.
“Neither is a consensus Top 100 prospect, so it would take a significant collection of secondary pieces to put together a competitive offer.”
New York already has traded some of its farm system this offseason, so why not make another deal? The Yankees possibly could lose Juan Soto at the end of the 2024 season so they need to go all in. Landing Cease could be the move they need.
