Washington Commanders Roster Moves as Three cornerbacks placed on injured reserve

The Washington Commanders have placed three cornerbacks on injured reserve. All three of them had been ruled out of Sunday’s home season finale against the Dallas Cowboys. Kendall Fuller(knee) missed last week’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers, and miss what could potentially be his last game with Washington. Fuller is a free agent, and could leave with a new coaching staff likely coming in soon. This was his second stint with Washington. He was drafted by the Redskins in 2016 in the 3rd round, but he was traded away the following year as part of the Alex Smith trade. He returned in free agency in 2020, Ron Rivera’s first year in charge of the team.

Christian Holmes was finally getting some playing time due to injuries in the secondary last week. He suffered a scary concussion and didn’t clear the protocol in time to be active vs the Cowboys. Tariq Castro-Fields was also getting some playing time on defense vs the 49ers, but suffered a shoulder injury that will end his season early.

The Washington Commanders signed a pair of defensive tackles from the practice squad. Abdullah Anderson and Benning Potoae’e have both been on Washington’s 53-man roster before, and they’ll both be getting a pay raise for the final week of the regular season. Jonathan Allen was also ruled out for Sunday’s game with a knee injury that kept him out of practice all week. Anderson and Potoa’e will be available on game day for depth and special teams.

Washington added another signing from the practice squad after initially only announcing two signings. CB Nick Whiteside II was elevated from the practice squad last week. He played 15 snaps on defense(21%) and 10 special teams snaps(48%). The secondary is very thin. There could be more moves coming, including elevations from the practice squad that would be announced tomorrow. S Sean Chandler was elevated last week, and could get the call again.

Three players are listed as questionable for the Cowboy’s game, and they could also be moved to IR if the coaches want to sign more players from the practice squad at other positions. S Kam Curl(quad), DE Casey Toohill(shoulder), and RT Andrew Wylie are all questionable. Wylie missed last week, and could get shut down for the finale.
