That’s according to Birmingham Live, with the outlet claiming Aston Villa are tracking several wide players at the moment.
Unai Emery has enjoyed an exceptional start to the season with Villa and has them in with a surprise shout for the Premier League title.
It remains to be seen whether or not Villa can sustain their early-season form over the course of the campaign. Yet, they’ve undoubtedly been amongst the best in the division so far.
The January transfer window feels like an ideal opportunity for the Villains to plug some gaps in their squad and hand Emery with the necessary players to compete.
Villa have already been linked with a move for Crysencio Summerville, with Fabrizio Romano recently claiming they are interested in the Leeds United star.
But a new name has been thrown into the mix as Birmingham Live claims Geny Catamo is amongst their targets.
The outlet reports that Villa do hold an interest in Catamo, as well as Summerville. It’s noted that it’s currently unclear which positions Villa will prioritise this month though.
Catamo has racked up 20 appearances for Sporting this term, registering four goal involvements in the process.
The Mozambique international is enjoying a bit of a breakthrough season for the Portuguese giants, after spending the last couple of seasons out on loan.
He’s received high praise from Mozambique’s manager recently, who claims he was dubbed as one of his former club’s very own Lionel Messi.
“He has always had great technical quality and, as he is left-footed, when he started taking his first steps in football he was known as Maxaquene’s Messi, which in itself speaks of the quality he demonstrated. Today he is our favorite,” Chiquinho Conde told A Bola back in July last year.
Catamo reportedly has a £52 million release clause in his contract and it’s difficult to see Villa offering that type of money for a relatively unproven talent.
Nevertheless, the 22-year-old would be an intriguing option for Emery and Villa are in need of extra options in an extra in the Attacking role.
