Projecting the Jets' final 53-man roster for the 2023 season

Jets confirm starting QB will miss season finale vs. Patriots

The conundrum that was the New York Jets’ quarterback situation this season will end with Zach Wilson being unavailable in the season finale.

On Wednesday, Jets coach Robert Saleh confirmed that Wilson has not cleared concussion protocol and will not be available for Sunday’s Week 18 game against the New England Patriots.

It’s the latest chapter in what’s been a wild ride for Wilson. The former No. 2 overall pick has gone from QB of the future to a perceived bust to the guy the team was relying on to keep their season alive.

Here’s a full recap of changes the Jets have made at quarterback this year:

NFL Week 14: Houston Texans at New York Jets
  • Offseason: The Jets trade for Aaron Rodgers, who takes the starting job from Wilson.
  • Week 1: Rodgers gets hurt four plays into the season, ceding the job back to Wilson.
  • Week 12: Wilson is benched in favor of Tim Boyle.
  • Week 14: Boyle is benched, giving the job back to Wilson.
  • Week 15: Wilson sustains a concussion as Trevor Siemian steps in.

The 32-year-old Siemian has bounced around the league since arriving in the NFL as a seventh-round pick of the Denver Broncos back in 2015. He’s since spent time with the Vikings, the Jets (first stint), Titans, Saints, Bears and Bengals before returning to New York in 2023.

Siemian initially landed with the practice squad in September before signing to the active roster in November.

The veteran quarterback has gone 1-1 as a starter this season. He went 27-of-49 for 217 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT in the Week 16 win over the Washington Commanders. He then went 32-of-45 for 261 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT in the 37-20 loss to the Cleveland Browns last time out.

As for Wilson, his future in New York remains uncertain. He’s entering the final year of his rookie contract and has yet to sniff the potential that made him the No. 2 pick of the draft. Has he played his last game in New York? Or will the Jets stick with him?

“We’ll see,” Saleh said Wednesday. “It’s all things that we’re going to have to talk about once the season’s over. But whether it’s here or somewhere else, I believe he’s going to have a hell of a career.”
