28-year-old midfielder is ‘very keen’ to sign for Newcastle as January meeting is set for this week

Newcastle United will reportedly hold a transfer meeting this week as they continue to be linked with signing Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City.

That is according to the Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards, who has been speaking about Newcastle’s interest in Kalvin Phillips on the latest episode of the Transfer Gossip Daily

The 28-year-old looks destined to leave Manchester City this month, with Eddie Howe’s side potentially the frontrunners to secure his signature. Newcastle have been the most heavily linked, while it has even been claimed that the club are confident of securing a deal.

That is yet to happen so far, with Newcastle not making a formal approach for the midfielder as of yet.

But the interest is there from Newcastle, and the feeling is mutual according to Luke Edwards.

Newcastle set for transfer meeting as Toon eye Kalvin Phillips loan

Speaking on Transfer Gossip Daily, Edwards has stated that Newcastle are due to have a meeting this week about what they can do in January as they continue pondering the possibility of bringing Phillips to St James’ Park.

“My understanding is that Kalvin Phillips is very keen on the Newcastle move,” he said.

“Newcastle are very keen on Kalvin Phillips, as they were in the summer. Newcastle are, like a lot of clubs, very wary about what has happened to Everton in terms of profit and sustainability rules

That’s a real and very present danger for Newcastle so they would like a loan. He ticks all the boxes – club want him, player wants, I believe, to move to Newcastle. But the size of the loan fee is prohibitive. They are looking for between £5million and £7million just to loan a player until the end of the season.”

Edwards added: “I think there are going to be some meetings at Newcastle this week in terms of thrashing out exactly what they can do with profit and sustainability rules.”

Newcastle have a big decision to make regarding Phillips

The fact that Phillips is really keen on a move to the North East is encouraging, and would suggest that he believes he can get the football he needs in a black and white shirt. The former Leeds man needs to go somewhere that he will play regularly, as he eyes up a spot in the England squad for Euro 2024.

The loan fee appears to be a bit of an issue, as it is a lot just to simply borrow a player for a few months. But that is the footballing climate we live in nowadays, which is why it is so difficult for teams outside the ‘big six’ to flex their muscles financially. Even if they do have the money, they are held back by profit and sustainability rules.

Edwards believes that a meeting is due to take place at Newcastle this week to decide what they can and can’t do during the January transfer window, so it perhaps won’t be long before we discover whether or not Phillips will be making the move to Tyneside.

It may all depend on whether or not the deal has to include an obligation to buy. Then it will come down to whether Eddie Howe thinks Phillips can play a part at Newcastle for years to come, or if he just sees him as a stopgap while Sandro Tonali is suspended.
