Ohio State quarterbacks leaves Cotton Bowl with Scary injury As the Quarterback Position Under Pressure

ARLINGTON, Texas — Ohio State football quarterback Devin Brown came into Friday’s Cotton Bowl with one gimpy ankle.

By the end of the first quarter, he had another, and the injury was severe enough to knock him out of the game. Brown went to the locker room early in the second quarter after injuring his left ankle. True freshman Lincoln Kienholz replaced him with Ohio State leading Missouri 3-0.

Brown returned to the sideline in the second quarter and rode a stationary bike.

Brown took his second sack late in the first quarter and immediately rolled over and grabbed his left ankle. He stayed in the game, though with a limp, and completed a pass over the middle.

In between series, Brown sat on the athletic trainer’s table and had the left ankle taped. The personnel at one point appeared to swap in a pair of high top cleats to give Brown more ankle support. He went back into the game, but running back TreVeyon Henderson took a direct snap on the final play of the first quarter.

He did the same on the second down play to start the second quarter. But with a passing down up, Brown took the snap on third down and went down hard when sacked from behind.

He shuffled back to the sideline and, shortly after, went to the locker room.

Brown suffered a sprained right ankle earlier this season against Penn State. It limited his practice time the remainder of the regular season and kept him off the field in mop-up duty.

Kienholz is making his first career appearance in the first half of a game. He was a summer enrollee. The only other scholarship quarterback on the roster is sixth-year transfer senior Tristan Gebbia.

Keinholz did not attempt a pass on his first series, handing off to Henderson three times.

Ohio State star receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. elected to sit out Friday night’s Cotton Bowl against Missouri in Arlington, Texas. Harrison, who finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting, was wearing his jersey top prior to the game but not dressed in uniform pants or wearing pads. Harrison has yet to announce his future plans. He is projected to be one of the first players selected if he declares for the 2024 NFL Draft. His other option is returning to Ohio State.
