Nick Sirianni on Jalen Hurts: “Just clutch in clutch moments” - Bleeding Green Nation

Philadelphia Experienced Quarterback sets NFL record which saw him flourish in the recent performances

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts scored on a 1-yard sneak against the New York Giants on Monday for his 15th rushing touchdown of the 2023 NFL season to set an NFL record.

After scoring on Philadelphia’s second offensive snap against the Giants, the former Alabama signal-caller has more rushing touchdowns in 2023 than any NFL quarterback has had in a single season.

Hurts entered Monday’s game tied with Cam Newton for the league record. A former Auburn All-American, Newton established the QB touchdown record of 14 in 2011, his first NFL season after the Carolina Panthers selected him as the No. 1 draft pick.

Of the 10 quarterbacks who have run for at least 10 touchdowns in a single season, Newton and Hurts are the only ones who have done so more than once. In addition to 14 TD runs in 2011, Newton had 10 in 2015 and 12 in 2020. Hurts had 10 in 2021 and 13 in 2022. They are the only quarterbacks to run for more than 12 touchdowns in a season.

With 41 rushing touchdowns, Hurts ranks fifth among quarterbacks in NFL history, even though Monday’s game was his 49th career start.

Newton holds the QB career record with 75 rushing touchdowns. Current Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has 51, Otto Graham had 44 and Steve Young 43.

Only three Philadelphia players at any position have had more rushing touchdowns than Hurts. Steve Van Buren holds the franchise career record with 69 rushing touchdown, Wilbert Montgomery had 45 and LeSean McCoy had 44.

Eleven of Hurts’ touchdowns this season have come on 1-yard plunges in Philadelphia’s Brotherly Shove formation. Of Newton’s 14 touchdowns in 2011, six were 1-yard scores.
