Astros’ Star Player would Be Impactful Player in 2024 According to GM
Houston Astros’ general manager, Dana Brown, has certainly been spilling some of his thoughts about the prospects they have in their pipeline.
Despite as having the worst-ranked farm system in Major League Baseball, the former scout turned executive has some high praise for many of their minor league players.
He already mentioned how he thinks their top prospect will become a star, and now he’s giving some insight on the timeline and potential impact that their best pitching prospect could have during 2024.
Brown appeared on the podcast, ASTROLINE, and spoke with the Astros’ TV play-by-play guy, Todd Kalas, about a multitude of different things.
When speaking about Houston’s No. 3 overall prospect, Spencer Arrighetti, the GM said, “He’s got some good traits to his stuff. He’s a competitor, he throws a lot of strikes.”
Their former sixth round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft has impressed so far during his tenure with the organization.
Arrighetti finished his third season of professional baseball at the Triple-A level and is expected to make his Major League debut at some point during 2024.
Primarily used as a starting pitcher, the right-hander had a record of 9-7 with a 4.40 ERA in 28 games and 21 starts last year. He’s also shown to be a high-strikeout guy, fanning 315 batters across 245 innings pitched throughout his minor league career.
And while the career numbers of a 19-15 record, 4.40 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and opponent’s batting average of .229 don’t necessarily scream dominance, Brown is confident the prospect will continue to improve.
“We think maybe he could turn the corner. Maybe he’ll come into Spring Training and light us up, maybe at some point he’ll get up early enough to win the Rookie of the Year [or] to be a candidate,” he said.
That’s quite the projection for a prospect who hasn’t quite overwhelmed all the opposition that he’s faced throughout his career.
But it looks like Arrighetti will be a major part of the Astros during the 2024 season. Whether that is in a starting role or relief role is to be seen.
