The NFL and Roger Goodell have made it known that Tennessee Titans safety Amani Hooker’s hit against Miami Dolphins wideout Jaylen Waddle in last week’s loss will not go unpunished. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the league and Roger Goodell have fined Hooker $21,855 for unnecessary roughness.

Hooker laid the wood on Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle early in the first quarter, resulting in Waddle temporarily leaving the game. Hooker tried to jar the ball loss from Waddle after the latter made a nice catch over the middle. The third-level defender led with his helmet while contacting Waddle’s upper body. However, the Dolphins offensive skill player held onto the ball. Despite a brief absence, Waddle returned later in the drive.

Hooker, a sixth-round selection in the 2019 NFL draft, has spent his entire five-year NFL career with the Tennessee Titans. Hooker was regulated to a rotational role as a rookie but became a fringe starter in 2020, registering 51 tackles, eight passes defended, and four interceptions. His first NFL interception came against Minnesota Vikings gunslinger Kirk Cousins. The Iowa Hawkeyes product became a full-time starter in 2021, posting 62 tackles and an interception. Hooker dealt with injuries last season, playing in only nine games.

Hooker is amid a career year, with a whopping 77 tackles through 12 games. He also has seven passes defended, one interception, and one forced fumble.
