Kyle Shanahan thinks 49ers have two MVP candidates

“I don’t want them to cancel each other out”

Throughout the season, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has not been too active in publically campaigning for any of his players to win the NFL MVP Award. And it turns out, there’s a good reason for that.

During a press conference this week, Kyle Shanahan explained that he hasn’t commented too much about the MVP race because he thinks the San Francisco 49ers have two MVP candidates in Christian McCaffrey and Brock Purdy, and he doesn’t want one to cancel out the other in MVP voting.

“That’s the only reason I wouldn’t overly comment on either one of them because I don’t want them to cancel each other out,” Shanahan said according to 49ersWebzone.com. “But if any non-quarterback is going to get an MVP, I don’t get how Christian McCaffrey can’t. I mean, he’s amazing in what he’s done all year. If it’s going to a quarterback, then I don’t have to talk about Christian. I can talk about our quarterback. And if his numbers is all you see, then I think that solves it up. But if you watch the film, then it makes it even stronger, which to me is the most important thing.”

Obviously, having too many MVP contenders is a good problem to have for a team and it means that the team is well-equipped to win an even more prestigious prize: a Lombardi Trophy.
