Charles Bassey to miss the remainder of the season with knee injury

The San Antonio Spurs have suffered their first major injury of the 2023-24 season. On Tuesday, ESPN’s Andrew Lopez reported that Charles Bassey will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his ACL in his left knee. The center suffered the injury while playing with the Austin Spurs on Sunday.

Bassey was primarily playing the backup center position for the Spurs before Victor Wembanyama was moved to the starting center, and Zach Collins was relegated to a bench role. Bassey was sent to Austin to get some reps while his role diminished on the NBA roster.

The center appeared in 19 games this season where he averaged 10.8 minutes a game, 3.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 0.9 blocks. He had shown improvements as a rim protector and finisher in the paint this season.

It’s another spell of bad luck for Bassey, who missed time last season after suffering a knee fracture in his left patella. It’s unfortunate timing, as the big man was putting together a solid start to his third NBA season.

The Spurs will lean on their depth at the center position moving forward. They have Wembanyama and Collins, as well as Sandro Mamukelashvili and Dominick Barlow who have both played minutes at the five in stretches this season.
