Armando Broja in limbo! Chelsea striker sees £30m move to Wolves paused amid FFP concerns

Wolves reportedly want to sign Chelsea’s Armando Broja, but because of financial concerns, they have ‘pressed pause’ on the proposed deal.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Wolves boss Gary O’Neill has a great deal of admiration for the Chelsea striker and has identified him as a top target. But with just one week left in the winter transfer window, O’Neil disclosed that Wolves have suddenly changed their intentions because of budgetary constraints. As per Mail Sport, the striker would have joined the club on loan with an obligation of £30 million ($38m) but that would put the club dangerously close to breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability rules.

WHAT O’NEIL SAID

“We had been working on a couple of options but it looks like they won’t be doable financially so it’s back to other options,” said O’Neil [via the Daily Mail]. “It’s disappointing as we felt we were making headway but it looks like it’s not doable.”

“I won’t just sign a player for the sake of it. We need to take people who deserve the chance to play for us and are good enough. January is tricky. Prices are inflated and people don’t want to lose good players.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wolves would definitely prefer not to reach the cusp of the Profitability and Sustainability limit over signing a striker this January. The league has already docked Everton 10 points and Nottingham Forest have been placed under investigation for the same breach, therefore they would prefer to stay as far from the PSR limits as possible.
