Phil Parkinson shares Wrexham striker boost after minor injury crisis
Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has confirmed Steven Fletcher is back on the grass as he steps up his return from injury.
Wrexham have had to contend with a few injury problems of late, prompting a dip into the free transfer market outside of the transfer window to add a bit of depth in key areas.
Phil Parkinson and co were facing a minor crisis at the top of the pitch before the signing of Jon Dadi Bodvarsson. Ollie Palmer, Mo Faal and Paul Mullin – who has had a tough time with injuries himself this year – were left as the only senior strikers when Jack Marriott joined Steven Fletcher on the sidelines.
Marriott had emerged as the Red Dragons’ leading talisman before suffering a broken leg in training, while veteran Fletcher has been dealing with a knee injury.
Now though, the former Scotland international is stepping up his return.
In a boost for Wrexham, manager Parkinson confirmed to the Evening Leader in a brief update that Fletcher has been back out on the grass as he steps up his recovery. It remains to be seen just when he can be back out on the pitch though.
“Fletch is back on the grass so we will try and progress him this week,” the boss said.
A welcome boost
Wrexham’s move to sign Bodvarsson helped them avoid a shortage of options up top but nonetheless, it will be a welcome boost for them to have Fletcher back in contention sooner rather than later.
He’s a vastly experienced presence at the top of the pitch and he’s shown he can still be a danger off the bench.
The 37-year-old might only have one goal this season but he’s helped Parkinson’s side see out some valuable wins. He has a respectable total of nine goals in 47 games for the club having mainly played a backup role at the top of the pitch.
Keeping up the impressive form
Wrexham will have been disappointed to lose to Harrogate Town in the FA Cup at the weekend but they have a four-game unbeaten streak in League One to maintain.
