49ers Trade Pitch Lands $10 Million Star WR for Brock Purdy After Brandon Aiyuk’s Injury
The San Francisco 49ers 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday was costly in several ways. The double-digit defeat at home to the team that beat them in February’s Super Bowl dropped San Francisco to a 3-4 record. Star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk had to leave Sunday’s game in the second quarter due to a knee injury. Per NFL Media, head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that the 49ers believe their star pass catcher has an ACL injury. Aiyuk will undergo more testing on Monday, but it appears likely the fourth-year receiver will miss the rest of the season. The 49ers should be on the lookout for pass-catching help before the trade deadline if they lose Aiyuk, as leading receiver Jauan Jennings was ruled out in Week 7 due to a hip injury.
Third-year quarterback Brock Purdy and the 49ers offense could use more firepower, as the team has a challenge spate of games coming up. The 49ers will host the 3-3 Dallas Cowboys in Week 8 before playing the 4-2 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 4-3 Seattle Seahawks, 5-2 Green Bay Packers, 5-2 Buffalo Bills, and 4-2 Chicago Bears by the second week of December. Things could get out of hand quickly in San Francisco if the team doesn’t find a way to win some of these games. One wide receiver already on the trade block might help the 49ers put up points if their current WR1 is out of the season. offseason. With $55 million in cap space, per Over the Cap, the 49ers could easily afford to take on Williams’ Salary. They’d have to be willing to part with a Day 3 pick (approximate sixth-round value) to make it happen. The former first-round pick for the Los Angeles Chargers isn’t getting many targets from Aaron Rodgers. On Sunday night, he caught one pass on two targets for 15 yards in the Jets’ 37-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Williams has just 11 receptions for 160 yards through the season’s first seven weeks. Williams only played in three games last season due to an
ACL injury. However, the 30-year-old receiver was a top receiver for Justin Herbert and the Chargers when he was healthy in 2021 and most of 2022. Williams has appeared in 95 NFL games and recorded 320 receptions for 4,966 yards and 31 touchdowns in his eight-year NFL career. The former Clemson star would be a reliable target for Purdy and could help keep the 49ers in the playoff hunt by New Year’s Day.
