Sunderland player leading Championship in one unwanted statistic with Romaine Mundle not far behind

Two Sunderland players, including Romaine Mundle, are among the Championship leaders for an unwanted statistic.

The Black Cats signed off for the October international break with a fairly positive result at the Stadium of Light.

Regis Le Bris and co. were aiming to go into the break with their place at the top of the Championship table secured for another two weeks.

The North East outfit made it tricky but Sunderland drew 2-2 with Leeds United on October 4th.

While three points alluded them, Sunderland are still top of the division but second-place Sheffield United are only behind them via goal difference despite the Blades kicking off the campaign with a two-point deduction.

Le Bris’ men will still likely feel confident about their promotion chances this term though and are no doubt eager to get back to winning ways in their next Championship fixture against Hull City on October 20th.

Romaine Mundle among Championship leaders for unwanted statistic

One of Sunderland’s biggest strengths so far this season has been their deadly attack.

The Black Cats have managed to net a very impressive 18 goals in nine league games – the most in the division.

However, some of their more skillful players may soon begin to feel the negative impact of one unwanted consequence of their excellent start.

WhoScored, via the Sunderland Echo, have now revealed the most fouled players in the Championship in 2024/25 so far.

And it is a Sunderland man who tops the list for most fouls committed on him per 90. Dennis Cirkin has been fouled 16 times this term.

Romaine Mundle is also on the list, having been fouled 22 times across 613 minutes of action.

Romaine Mundle must adapt to new Sunderland role

While Mundle is among the most fouled players in the Championship this season, it is a positive for the player, even if his ankles probably do not agree.

The 21-year-old only scored one goal and assisted zero in 11 Championship outings during his debut campaign.

But with Jack Clarke now gone, Mundle has stepped up and already netted three in nine this term.

That new-found form is bound to attract more pushback from defenders but as long as Mundle can avoid any major injury issues, he should be able to thrive in his new more prominent role for Sunderland.
