49ers’ Ricky Pearsall to return to practice on Monday in recovery from gunshot wound

Ricky Pearsall has yet to take a regular-season snap, but his rookie season already qualifies as remarkable: The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver will return to practice Monday, 44 days after he was shot in the chest during a robbery attempt in San Francisco’s Union Square. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that the 49ers would open the practice window next week for Pearsall, their first-round pick who was placed on the non-football injury list two days after he was shot, making him ineligible to play in the season’s first four games.

Pearsall is unlikely to make his NFL debut against the Chiefs at Levi’s Stadium on Oct. 20. The 49ers have 21 days after opening Pearsall’s practice window to activate him to the 53-man roster. “I would think it would be a longer ramp-up period,” Shanahan said when asked about Pearsall playing against the Chiefs. “Health-wise and everything, he’s totally good to go. But I really won’t decide that stuff until we start watching him practice. We’re not going to rush it. If he’s ready, he’s ready. And if he’s not, we’ve got a few weeks.”

Pearsall was shot in the right side of his chest with a .40 caliber Glock 23 on Aug. 31 while carrying shopping bags outside luxury boutiques in Union Square. He avoided a fatal injury and did not require surgery because the bullet hit no vital organs, nerves or ribs before exiting through his back
