Former Wrexham boss gives verdict on Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney plans to build 55,000-seater stadium

Wrexham under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are planning big things for the Racecourse Ground.

Wrexham have played at the Racecourse Ground for over 100 years. But in 100 years time from now, the Racecourse Ground as we know it, may change indefinitely.

Owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have huge plans for the Racecourse, stating earlier this year that they want to rebuild the stadium, stand by stand.

There’s plans in place to rebuild the Kop Stand. But McElhenney has previously stated that he hopes to one day see up to 55,000 fans at the Racecourse, once each stand has been revamped.

It comes amid the club’s recent wave of success, earning back-to-back promotions and now challenging for a third-straight promotion.

Phil Parkinson’s side currently sit in 2nd place of the League One table but beat Wolves U21s in the EFL Trophy in midweek.

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Wrexham manager and now pundit Dean Saunders discussed the club’s future plans to house 55,000 in the Racecourse Ground.

Saunders said live on air on Friday morning: “I mean, they are gaining fans from everywhere.

“The series they put on, obviously what they are doing for the town, and I wouldn’t put it past them. 55,000 is a lot to ask.

“And, I thought, at the time, looking back, I remember thinking, we will get 25,000 for getting in the Championship.

“We might get 25,000. But to make the stadium a 55,000 capacity, it’s just incredible.”

Wrexham ambition knows no boundaries

Wrexham have proven that they can acquire fans from across the globe, as Saunders alludes to above.

They’ve branched out to the US, with their impressive marketing making Wrexham a well-followed club across the world.

And if they continue to rise up the pyramid, and potentially qualify for European football soon, their popularity will only increase.

Eventually, if Wrexham boast a stadium even half the size of 55,000, it’ll tempt fans from all over to come and see the Dragons in action.

Whilst 55,000 is a lot, the current owners have shown no limits to their ambition so far, and there’s no reason to believe that the club won’t one day have a mega stadium, and that they couldn’t fill it.
