Lee Trundle reacts to Wrexham talks over Welsh League Cup with Phil Parkinson already on board
Wrexham are on an incredible journey under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds but European football could be heading to the STōK Cae Ras soon.
Wrexham’s trajectory has been completely changed since the arrival of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.
The days of being stuck in mid-table of the National League are in the past and Wrexham are looking up.
Back-to-back promotions have Wrexham challenging in League One – and possibly even looking higher.
Wrexham have started the season brilliantly and deservedly sit second in the League One table.
Championship football may not be out of the question and Reynolds wants another promotion this season.
Lee Trundle on Wrexham talks
Wrexham’s owners may be dreaming of Premier League football in the near future but there is real potential for European action.
Reports suggested last weekend that Wrexham have held talks to join the Welsh League Cup.
This would be a stunning move which could see Wrexham qualify for the UEFA Conference League action.
Wrexham would have to give up potential European qualification through English competitions to make that happen though.
Cardiff City, Swansea City and Newport County are also looking into the same move, marking a potentially huge move for the four Welsh clubs in the English Football League.
Former Wrexham and Swansea hitman Lee Trundle has offered his view on the talks whilst speaking to BBC Sport.
Trundle believes that Cymru Premier clubs should be interested in the idea as it will bring money into the Welsh game.
Trundle added that the idea is ‘brilliant’ and thinks players should be desperate to test themselves against the likes of Wrexham in the Welsh League Cup.
“I think that’s something that we’ve got to look at, if you can have a competition that will bring money into Welsh football, that helps everyone,” said Trundle.
“I think it’s great that the money will be filtered down. Me as a fan and me as someone playing in the Welsh leagues as well, I think it’s brilliant. To even come up against one of those professional clubs and test yourself as a player, I think it will highlight the league more,” he added.

Welsh League Cup dividing opinion
Trundle is certainly in favour and so is Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson.
Parkinson suggested that opening up the route for Wrexham to potentially qualify for Europe would be ‘amazing’.
Parkinson hopes that an agreement can be reached with McElhenney, Reynolds and co already presenting a proposal to the relevant governing bodies.
Not everybody is on board though and Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has shared his concerns.
MacAnthony feels that Cymru Premier clubs are already well behind the likes of Wrexham in terms of income and TV deals.
The Irishman fears that hampering their European hopes would be another blow and admitted that the proposal doesn’t sit well with him.
It may be some time before we learn whether this proposal will be given the green light, but Wrexham certainly seem serious about making it happen.
