Browns May Get Offensive Weapon Back vs. Commanders in Week 5
The Cleveland Browns have an important matchup in Week 5 against a surging Washington Commanders. After sputtering out of the gate to start the season, and sitting at 1-3 after four games largely due to injuries across the roster, good news could be coming on Sunday. The entire city of Cleveland is awaiting the return of star running back Nick Chubb, who had his 21-day practice window open this week after rehabbing a gruesome Week 2 knee injury from 2023.
But Chubb won’t be activated for the matchup with the Commanders, although coach Kevin Stefanski stated that Chubb “looks like himself to me” through the practice week per Ashley Bastock of Cleveland.com. The team is expected to have tight end David Njoku for the first time since Week 1 when he suffered an ankle injury. Njoku was limited in practice on Wednesday and did not participate Thursday, which per Stefanski was planned.
Njoku tallied four catches for 44 yards in the loss to the Cowboys in Week 1 before leaving with the injury. Last season was his best with 81 catches for 882 yards and six touchdowns.
The Browns will also still be without linebacker Jordan Hicks (ribs, elbow, triceps), offensive tackle James Hudson (shoulder), and defensive end Alex Wright (triceps). Wright is on his way to injured reserve and will miss the rest of the season. The Cleveland Browns are on the road once again to square off with the 3-1 Washington Commanders during Week 5. While the Browns have yet to find its groove on offense through four games, the Commanders are rising in the standings behind rookie phenom QB Jayden Daniels.
Cleveland is trying to avoid a 1-4 start to the season despite a healthy Deshaun Watson at the quarterback position. Dropped passes from the Browns receiving corp, a nonexistent rushing game, and big injuries to the O-line have all combined to create a bad vibes start to Cleveland’s 2024-25 campaign.
This is a cross-divisional battle, so the standings implications are not too heavy on the Browns shoulders. But, a win would go a long way to put the team back on track before star RB Nick Chubb returns to the active roster, and would take pressure off of hobbled DE Myles Garrett to perform.
