2023 Packers Training Camp Preview: Biggest Question at Outside Linebacker - Sports Illustrated Green Bay Packers News, Analysis and More

Vikings Sign Linebacker Max Tooley to Practice Squad

The Vikings on Thursday signed linebacker Max Tooley to their practice squad.

Tooley joins Minnesota after first entering the NFL earlier this year with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent.

The BYU product appeared in each of Houston’s four preseason games (including the Hall of Fame Game) on defense and special teams. He totaled 10 tackles (nine on defense and one on special teams), a quarterback hit and a forced fumble.

A native of Bountiful, Utah, Tooley played six seasons at BYU (2018-23), seeing action in 60 games with 31 starts. In his sixth year in 2023, Tooley posted single-season career highs in games started (10), total tackles (92) and tackles for loss (five).

Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes is on track to potentially finish as the best quarterback in NFL history, and that’s including Tom Brady and his seven Super Bowl championships. Mahomes is one of the game’s purest passers but has also terrorized opposing defenses with his legs to the tune of nearly 2,000 rushing yards and 12 TDs across 98 regular season games. Mahomes’ creativity and dual-threat ability have helped him lead the Chiefs to four Super Bowl appearances and three championships during his six years as the starter between 2018-23.

However, despite all of Mahomes’ success, one quarterback from the early days of the Super Bowl era put voice behind some beef that he has with the Chiefs QB and all the fanfare Mahomes receives for his so-called unique style of play.

Former Minnesota Vikings signal-caller and Hall of Fame inductee Fran Tarkenton told Alec Lewis of The Athletic on Tuesday, September 17, that Mahomes has no skill set that Tarkenton didn’t flash first.

“I would be more successful today,” Tarkenton said of playing in the contemporary NFL. “Because the field is spread out more. I watch Patrick Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes doesn’t do anything I didn’t do. Nothing.” And Tarkenton wasn’t done there. “Nothing,” Tarkenton reiterated. “I was just the first one who did it … with a fullback and two halfbacks!”

Stefon Diggs was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2015. Few remember that Diggs was a former top national WR recruit, who fell all the way into the 5th round of that draft, thanks to an up and down college career at Maryland.

That’s because he was a problem for defensive backs pretty much the moment he stepped onto an NFL football field. As a rookie, Diggs played 13 games and started 7, racking up over 700 yards receiving and 4 touchdowns.

Over the course of five seasons, Stefon became one of the best Vikings wide receivers in team history. Diggs ranks 10th all-time in yards (4,623) and touchdowns (30). He also ranks 11th all-time in receptions (365), falling just short of Sammy White’s 393. Justin Jefferson’s ever increasing count currently sits 9th, at 400.

While the wide receiver’s exit wasn’t the smoothest, full of cryptic tweets, sideline blowups, skipped practices and infamous back-and-forths with reporters. But that doesn’t mean Diggsy has lost any love for his original NFL home.

The now 30-year-old wideout makes his return to the Twin Cities on Sunday, with his third team, the Houston Texans, for a week three matchup between two undefeated squads. Stefon met with Texans reporters on Thursday, to talk about the game, his history with the Vikings, and his love for Minnesota.
