Tottenham gem Ashley Phillips set for Premier League loan switch amid ‘promising’ claim

John Wenham has speculated that Tottenham defender Ashley Phillips will join a Premier League club on loan next season.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes the 19-year-old needs some top flight experience before being considered in North London, where Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are currently the top picks.

Phillips is currently playing his football with Stoke City after joining the EFL Championship side on a season-long loan in August.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes the England youth international will feature regularly at the bet365 Stadium this year.

“I still think he will need a year in the Premier League before being considered for Tottenham,” Wenham said.

“However, what is interesting is that when he went to Stoke, I understand that they already had four centre-backs, one of them being the club captain.

“Therefore, to see him starting games is hugely promising. It does seem like he will play a lot, which is important.

“Hopefully he does a full season there, gets around 40 games under his belt and then joins a Premier League club on loan next season. He is on a very positive trajectory at the moment.”

Tottenham defender Ashley Phillips to earn Premier League loan switch?

Phillips has thus far started three matches for Stoke since joining the club. Therefore, he will hope to continue featuring and making an impact.

After spending last season on loan with Plymouth Argyle, Phillips will have two years of Championship experience under his belt at the end of the season.

As a result, he will likely feel ready to make the step up to the Premier League.

And should his potential loan spell in England’s top flight go to plan, he might then be ready to stake his first-team claim at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Phillips is one of many exciting young players at Tottenham, and the club must ensure they get his development right.
