Wolves defender Craig Dawson has shared his verdict on one of the club’s summer signings.
Despite there being a lull in Wolves’ transfer activity in the middle of the summer, the Old Gold had a strong end to the window.
Gary O’Neil and Matt Hobbs welcomed eight new signings to Molineux, including three deadline-day additions.
Sam Johnstone, Andre and Carlos Forbs committed their futures to Wolves on the final day of the transfer window to cement O’Neil’s squad for the season ahead.
Craig Dawson shares Sam Johnstone verdict after Wolves transfer
Wolves signed Johnstone from Crystal Palace on the final day of the window, with the Englishman arriving and taking Jose Sa’s place to make his debut.
It was a surprise to see Johnstone assume the position between the posts in Wolves’ fixture against Nottingham Forest last time out.
There were some questions over Sa’s future at Molineux, with transfer links surrounding the player.
While Sa may not be best pleased to see Johnstone arrive, other Wolves players are more enthusiastic about the England international’s arrival, as Craig Dawson explained.
Speaking on the Wolves Express podcast, Dawson shared what he thinks the ‘keeper will add to O’Neil’s squad.
“He’s very calm, very steady and he’s an experienced Premier League goalkeeper,” Dawson explained.
It’s unclear whether the plan to bring in Johnstone was to replace or offer competition to Sa however, it looks as though the Portugal international could be on his way out.
Johnstone has already spoken about Sa and the matter of competing with the shot-stopper, admitting that it’s ‘no secret’ that he wants to be playing regularly.
“Jose is a good keeper and we are going to compete with each other,” Johnstone said.
“The goalie group is really good. He welcomed me into the club as did the other lads. There is no secret I want to play football and I am competing against a good goalkeeper.”
Johnstone made a decent first impression at Wolves against Forest, being the calm and composed figure in the box that Dawson describes him as.
It will be interesting to see how the saga between the sticks plays out, with the main thing being that the Old Gold recruited a Premier League-experienced ‘keeper in the summer.
Wolves have experienced some near misses in the transfer window and none more so in 2021 when they could have signed a player who is now worth £100 million.
Wolves concluded the most recent transfer window with eight new signings, the most eye-catching being Brazilian midfielder Andre and striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.
