Milan Aleksic in focus: what Sunderland can expect from £3.1m signing

Regis Le Bris now has a ‘phenomenal’ young talent for Sunderland who ‘plays like Messi’ but unfortunately…

Sunderland fans are in dreamland after their perfect start to the Championship campaign, with much of their start owed to players already at the club.

Regis Le Bris has inherited a squad full of exciting talents, helping him settle into life at the Stadium of Light with relative ease.

Le Bris is calling for his youthful Sunderland side to remain concentrated after their incredible start, but it would be understandable if fans couldn’t contain themselves.

Two of last season’s incomings, Romain Mundle and Eliezer Mayenda, have electrified Championship defences in the opening weeks. With Jobe Bellingham supporting them, Sunderland have one of the league’s most exciting frontlines.

Whilst some clubs may have looked to add experience to this youthful mix, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Juan Sartori doubled down on their commitment to youth on transfer deadline day.

20-year-old Striker Ahmed Abdullahi joined the club from Gent to provide competition for Mayenda, but the most exciting deal was the Black Cats signing of Serbian Milan Aleksic from FK Radnicki 1923, who comes with quite an incredible comparison.

At only 19, Aleksic has already garnered generational hype in his home nation of Serbia. He impressively scored in both legs of FK Radnicki 1923’s Europa Conference League qualifying defeat to Montenegro side, FK Mornar Bar.

Performances like these have caught the attention of Serbian national team manager Dragan Stojkovic, who was full of praise for the starlet back in May.

In an interview with Mozzart Sport in Serbia, Stojkovic said: “I saw one reception of the ball like Messi. This is something that not everyone can do. He has phenomenal control of the ball, vision, and passing. He is already in our junior selections and the future is working for him.”

Stojkovic has gone on to be quoted on Aleksic, saying: “I don’t care how old he is, he represents the future. He deserves to be given a chance, to be in the company of the best.”

Evidently, there are high hopes for Aleksic to be one of the stars of Serbian football in the future. For now, though, all attention turns to his time at the Stadium of Light.

When will Sunderland fans get to see Milan Aleksic?
Le Bris’ side will be hoping for an immediate impact from Aleksic, but The Black Cats may have to be patient with their new midfield maestro.

In fact, the very same stars of this campaign so far can be used as a guide for Le Bris. Mundle and Mayenda may be worrying Championship defences this season, but the pair accumulated only 19 League appearances between them last season.

Mundle was able to get off the mark with one goal, but Mayenda struggled and failed to score in his eight league appearances.

Patience has clearly paid off with these two, and a similar method will have to be taken with Aleksic. The Serbian could make his debut against Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth after the international break, but fans shouldn’t demand any Messi-like performances too soon.
