Although Sheffield Wednesday have managed an emphatic summer transfer window, bringing nine arrivals through the doors at Hillsborough Stadium, the hunt for a striker ahead of the opening Championship bout against Plymouth Argyle remains a top priority for Danny Rohl’s side.
Number one Sheffield Wednesday target Ike Ugbo is the centre of a tug of war between the Owls and Championship rivals Sunderland, with there being ongoing differences between the South Yorkshire outfit and Troyes in the financial structure of the deal.
Sory Kaba has been highlighted as a back-up option for Rohl’s side, after it was highlighted that he could live up to Championship standard following an emphatic half-a-season spell at Cardiff City in the 2022/23 season.
Sheffield Wednesday have now found another option plying his trade in the Premier League, however there is a notable blockade preventing any deal going through.

Sheffield Wednesday inquire for Leicester City forward Tom Cannon but blocked by two issues
Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly inquired into the possibility of signing Tom Cannon on loan from Leicester City, however Jamie Vardy’s injury is currently acting as a blockade from any deal being pursued, per Alan Nixon on Patreon.
Leicester City striker Cannon is ‘one of only a couple of fit and available central strikers’ for the Premier League side, creating doubt on whether the former Preston North End forward will actually be moving on from the King Power Stadium.
The Owls, alongside fellow Championship outfit Oxford United had inquired into the prospect of bringing Cannon to their prospective clubs, however the Owls ‘are behind in the race’.
Sheffield Wednesday must make key decision over attacking transfer targets
Rohl’s side have clearly shown their interest in Cannon as a result of the on-going uncertainty of a deal going ahead for Ugbo, and it would be safe to presume that both will not be joining Sheffield Wednesday.
As the transfer window edges towards its conclusion, Sheffield Wednesday will continue to face a race against time, especially with there being less than a week until the opening Championship fixture.
Sheffield Wednesday must almost put all of their eggs in one basket in the pursuit for a striker, with Ugbo making the most sense, despite Sunderland continuing to make strides in signing the attacker.
Owls fan Vardy’s injury has plagued Sheffield Wednesday’s chances of bringing in Cannon, therefore any chance of Rohl’s side being bolstered by a new striker ahead of the opening Championship clash will be if his side fully focus on bringing Canadian international Ugbo back to Hillsborough.
