Pirates trade for Miami Marlins outfielder Bryan De La Cruz

De La Cruz owns 18 home runs and 51 RBIs in 105 games in Miami.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have made their biggest move of the 2024 trade deadline with one hour to spare.

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the Pirates have acquired outfielder Bryan De La Cruz from the Miami Marlins. Right-handed pitcher Jun-Seok Shim and infielder Garret Forrester.

A 24-year-old outfielder under club control for three additional seasons, De La Cruz is slashing .245/.289/.419 with a .706 OPS, 18 home runs, and 51 RBIs. He owns 19 doubles, 24 walks, and 118 strikeouts in 105 games. De La Cruz is a significant addition to the Pirates as a corner outfielder who now ranks tied for first on the team in home runs and third in RBIs.

Shim, 20, was signed by the Pirates for $750,000 as one of the top prospects in the 2023 international signing period. Shim was the second-highest-ranked pitcher and was ranked the Bucs’ 17th-best prospect by MLB Pipeline. A 6-foot-4 righty with a 60-grade fastball and 55-grade curve, Shim has not pitched in 2024 after compiling a 3.38 ERA in four games (eight total innings) in 2023.

Forrester, 22, was drafted 73rd overall in 2023 out of Oregon State and plays first, third, and catcher. Ranked as the Pirates No. 18 prospect, Forrester hit .273 in 34 games in High-A Bradenton with one homer and nine RBIs.
