Stoke City handed Tom Cannon transfer update as Leicester City ‘make loan decision’.

Stoke City have made good strides in the transfer market so far – but one key position needs strengthening.

Stoke City are in the market for a striker this summer, a player they hope will pass the magic 20 goals-a-season mark for the first time since Peter Thorne achieved the feat nearly a quarter of a century ago.

The Potters have faced plenty of problems since relegation from the Premier League in 2018, but a common thread during that time has been a lack of goals, and it is something current boss Steven Schumacher is keen to finally put to bed.

Of course, strikers do not come cheap, and with the brakes applied hard to spending in recent years, finding that player has been made extra hard.

This summer the Potters are doubling down on their efforts to right a wrong that has lingered for far too long. However, it seems that one option has already been denied them.

Stoke are one of a host of clubs said to have shown interest in Leicester City striker Tom Cannon, who through injury and then managerial preference largely remained a bystander as the Foxes won promotion to the top-flight last season.

Nonetheless, the £6m recruit from Everton a year ago has a decent pedigree, and it seems new Foxes boss Steve Cooper wants to see what the 21-year-old Irishman can do before deciding if a loan is the best option in his development, according to The Telegraph.Cannon scored twice on his full Leicester City debut – a 4-1 home Championship success over Huddersfield Town on New Year’s Day. He was also on target a week later as the Foxes won 3-2 at Millwall in the FA Cup.

A product of Everton’s youth system, Cannon went on to make 17 appearances in all last season. The Telegraph’s John Percy writes: “There could be a few other departures. Decisions have to be made on the futures of Victor Kristiansen and Boubakary Soumaré, who were both out on loan last season. Tom Cannon, a £6m signing from Everton, is a loan target for a string of Championship clubs including Stoke City, but will be given a chance to impress.”

Stoke have already made three signings this summer – left-back Eric Bocat, centre-half Ben Gibson and goalkeeper Viktor Johansson – but a striker has so far eluded them.
