Wrexham’s Parkinson: Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer to remain at club

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has confirmed that “legends” Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer remain a part of the club’s plans for next season.

The Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-owned side earned their third successive promotion last weekend to secure a place in next season’s English Championship.

Mullin and Palmer have been key contributors in this rapid rise up the English football pyramid. Mullin was the team’s top scorer in their promotion campaigns to League 1 and League 2, and is the seventh-highest scorer in their history with 110 goals.

Palmer struck up a fruitful partnership with Mullin in attack, and scored vital goals in their promotion run-in last season. In all, he has scored 44 goals in 149 appearances.

However, the duo have struggled for gametime this season and haven’t made a league appearance since January.

Amid uncertainity over their future, Parkinson told BBC Sport Wales: “First of all, everyone’s made a contribution. What level that has been doesn’t matter because everybody’s been together and contributed.

“Of course there’s always players who would have liked to have played more. Equally, contributions can come in many forms, so I’m delighted with everybody as a group.

“Mulls and Ollie will always be legends at this club for what they’ve done. They’re under contract next year and they’ll be back in pre-season ready to go again.”

An insight into Paul Mullin’s feelings on losing his place in the Wrexham squad has been shared by Mickey Thomas.

Paul Mullin spent the previous three campaigns as one of the club’s most crucial players as they continued their climb up the EFL.

He was the top scorer in Wrexham’s previous two promotion-winning campaigns, despite missing the start of 2023/24 with an injury.

However, the 30-year-old has lost his starting berth and place in matchday squads since the Red Dragons signed Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith.

Wrexham fans want Mullin to return this weekend, and an insight into the player’s feelings has now been provided.

Mickey Thomas shares insight into Paul Mullin stance on Wrexham snub

The striker has been out of the League One picture since January 28 of this year.

But Mullin was part of Wrexham’s promotion celebrations last week, which included an appearance from Mickey Thomas.

Thomas has since revealed, as per Wales Online, that he spoke to the Wrexham forward who is said to ‘understand’ sometimes you won’t always be in favour.

The Wrexham legend then backed Mullin to try and work his way back into the team next season.

He said: “I spoke to Paul Mullin and he’s not playing at this moment in time, but he’s been a big player for Wrexham over the years and his goal return has been exceptional.

“He was celebrating afterwards with all the players and he understands that sometimes you’re not going to be in favour, but I’m sure he’ll work this summer to try and get back into that starting XI next season. Only time will tell whether that will happen.”

Phil Parkinson gives Paul Mullin Wrexham future update

Amid his axe, there has been speculation that Mullin and Ollie Palmer won’t be at Wrexham come the 2025/26 season getting underway.

The club have seven strikers competing for two spots right now, though that could decrease to six if Steven Flethcer leaves when his current contract expires.

However, Parkinson provided an update this week on the plan for Mullin and Palmer going forward, confirming they will be returning for pre-season.

He said: “First of all, everyone’s made a contribution. What level that has been doesn’t matter because everybody’s been together and contributed.

“Of course there’s always players who would have liked to have played more. Equally, contributions can come in many forms, so I’m delighted with everybody as a group.

“Mulls and Ollie will always be legends at this club for what they’ve done. They’re under contract next year and they’ll be back in pre-season ready to go again.”
