West Brom next manager latest as coach with just thirteen games experience becomes contender

West Brom have a big decision to make on who to bring in as their new manager

West Brom are in the hunt for a new manager after making the decision to sack Tony Mowbray. The Baggies are weighing up their options as they search for the right candidate. They have missed out on the Championship play-offs this season.

Mowbray was appointed back in December after Carlos Corberan left for Valencia. However, he wasn’t able to make the impact he would have hoped to at The Hawthorns. The Midlands outfit have two more fixtures left to play before they can start properly preparing for the summer.

West Brom eye Ryan Mason swoop to replace Tony Mowbray

West Brom are eyeing a potential swoop for Tottenham Hotspur first-team coach Ryan Mason, according to journalist Alan Nixon on his Patreon page. They are being linked with a move for the Premier League man as a possible replacement for Mowbray. He has been part of Ange Postecoglou’s backroom staff over the past couple of years.

Mason, 33, was forced to retire early in 2018 after picking up a head injury. He rose up through the academy ranks at Spurs before going on to make 70 appearances for their first-team. The ex-England international, who played once for the Three Lions, was also loaned out to Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers, Millwall, FC Lorient and Millwall to get experience.

Hull City snapped him up on a permanent basis back in 2016 following their promotion from the second tier. He then went on to play 20 matches for the East Yorkshire club and scored two goals. The London-born suffered a nasty collision with Gary Cahill during a top flight match with the Tigers at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea and had to hang up his boots after it.

What would Ange Postecoglou’s number two Ryan Mason offer to West Brom?

Mason is a bright young coach and has been working in an elite environment at Spurs. He joined their coaching staff in 2018 and has since worked his way up to the senior set-up. They made him interim head coach in 2021 after Jose Mourinho was sacked and he became the youngest manager of a top flight team at just 29.

He found himself in a similar position in 2023 before Postecoglou came in. Mason has won six of his combined 13 matches at the helm. Postecoglou said last year: “Ryan Mason is in charge of attacking set-pieces. He’s done an outstanding job all year. Mile [Jedinak as well] in charge of defensive set-pieces I thought we were brilliant.

We’ve been really good in that space all year and it’s a credit to both. All the coaches put in a real big shift this week. We knew we were going to have players in there playing their first game for a while or first time ever and all of them to a man did an outstanding job to prepare the team.”

West Brom could see Mason as someone capable of taking them forward in the long run. The Baggies may look to think outside the box with their next appointment. They have two fixtures left to play this term against Cardiff City away and Luton Town at home.
