Ipswich Town's hopes of re-signing Jens Cajuste dealt fresh blow by Besiktas

Ipswich Town’s hopes of re-signing Jens Cajuste dealt fresh blow

Ipswich Town may be powerless in a bid to bring Jens Cajuste back to the club this summer, with Turkish giants Besiktas showing interest in the Swedish midfielder.

Cajuste joined the Tractor Boys on loan for their Premier League campaign from Napoli, with an option to buy for €12 million – which turned into an obligation should Kieran McKenna have been able to keep them in England’s top flight.

McKenna was unable to do that though, and whilst Town still do have that eight-figure transfer agreement they can trigger, it doesn’t appear that they want to pay that price, it also wouldn’t mean that the 25-year-old would be guaranteed to land in Suffolk – they now have fresh competition for his services too.

According to a report from TWTD, Besiktas are now interested in taking Cajuste to Turkey, where they are now managed by former Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Besiktas finished fourth in the Turkish Super Lig last season, and as a result, they’ve qualified for the UEFA Europa League, although they’ll need to advance through three qualifying rounds if they want to make it to the main league stage.

As per TWTD’s claims, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that Cajuste will be returning to Portman Road this summer, with Besiktas the latest club to express an interest in signing the 25-cap Sweden international.

Cajuste played 30 times for Ipswich in their Premier League relegation campaign, but was one of their more impressive performers on the whole, and despite the report claiming that Napoli are happy to let the Scandinavian midfielder depart for €10 million – less than Ipswich’s option to buy – the Championship doesn’t appear to be on his mind.

There will be a few areas of the pitch that Ipswich and McKenna need to target and strengthen this coming summer, and with Cajuste, Kalvin Phillips and Massimo Luongo all leaving, the engine room is definitely one of those.

Ipswich had a strong base when they were promoted in the first place in the form of Sam Morsy and Luongo, but the former isn’t getting any younger now, and will need some fresh, younger legs besides him if he’s going to be starting every week in a competitive Championship.

Town are yet to make a move when it comes to signings so far this summer, with only one big outgoing transfer to deal with as well in the form of Liam Delap to Chelsea, so as it currently stands, there aren’t major gaps to fill.

That may change as the summer rolls on though, but one thing is for sure – if Cajuste isn’t returning to Ipswich, then they need to move for one of their primary midfield targets, and fast.
