Joe Gelhardt signs long-term contract at Leeds United - Leeds United

Hull City star Joe Gelhardt offers encouragement after Norwich City frustrations

Hull City loanee Joe Gelhardt admitted the Tigers dressing room was a frustrated place after being held to a 1-1 draw by Norwich City, having thrown away a half-time lead, though he believes the point is a good one.

City were deservedly in front after 14 minutes when Gelhardt played in Lewie Coyle to cut the ball back perfectly for Matt Crooks to power past Angus Gunn.

That lead lasted until two minutes into the second half when in-form striker Josh Sargent glanced in a perfect cross, and though both sides traded chances thereafter, both were forced to settle with a point, which Gelhardt says is crucial in the Tigers’ bid to avoid the drop to League One.

“I think it’s a good point, at the end of the day, because they’re a good team,” the Whites loanee told Hull Live. “On another day, I think we get three points. We had good chances in the game the andre were some moments where we were under the cosh a little bit, but that’s what a good team does. We got across the line and got a point on the board.

“They’re a good team. We went 1-0 up and you don’t ever want to give up on a lead so early, especially how it came so early in the second half, but I think we regrouped well after that, we got on the front foot a little bit.

“It was quite end-to-end the game, and I think we both had chances, but as I say, I think we put our chances to bed and get three points on another day.”

After a dominant start and then going in front, having got so much joy down the right especially, City appeared to lose their momentum, and the Canaries took control, albeit without threatening in the remainder of the half.

“I think that happens in football, doesn’t it? When a team goes a goal up, you sort of tend to try and protect that lead, and I think in the future, we can stay aggressive, be more aggressive, but you’ve got to be wary, as I said, they’re a quality team and if you take risks, they can punish you if you don’t get the risk right.

“We got in at half-time 1-0 up, which isn’t bad, but it’s just the start of the second half. We came out a little bit on the back foot, it was how we went in really.”

Given City’s wretched home record which now stands at two wins in 16 league games, you could understand if there was a sense of nervousness around the MKM Stadium. Gelhardt, though, believes if there was in the crowd, it didn’t filter into the players.
