Exclusive: Ryan Mason opens talks to be new West Brom manager
Tottenham coach Ryan Mason has opened talks to become the new West Brom manager, sources have told Football Insider.
The 33-year-old is currently a member of Ange Postecoglou’s first-team coaching staff at the newly-crowned Europa League champions.
Mason is now in pole position to be the new boss of Championship outfit West Brom, who missed out on promotion after finishing ninth in the recently-completed campaign.
The Baggies have been without a manager since 21 April when Tony Mowbray was sacked following a 3-1 home defeat to relegation-threatened Derby County.
Mowbray’s spell lasted just three months, having arrived in January after Carlos Corberan left to join Valencia in a turbulent season behind the scenes at The Hawthorns.
Ryan Mason tipped to replace Tony Mowbray at West Brom
West Brom finished the season under the interim guidance of James Morrison, who took charge of two games, a draw with Cardiff and a final-day win against Luton.
Their decision to sack Mowbray was widely criticised, although the 61-year-old averaged just 1.12 points per game across his 17 league games in charge.
The Baggies are aiming to continue their ambitions of promotion into next season, and feel Mason would be a good fit for their plans.
The Tottenham coach has overseen 13 games as an interim boss after the dismissals of both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, most notably in the 2021 League Cup final.
After learning under the likes of Mourinho, Conte and now Postecoglou, Mason believes he is ready to make the step up to a permanent managerial role.

Albion are set for another busy summer, with managerial appointments and both incoming and outgoing transfers now the focus.
Darnell Furlong is being linked with a move away, as Queens Park Rangers are eyeing a reunion with the full-back who left for The Hawthorns in 2019.
Meanwhile, Daryl Dike has bid farewell to his West Brom teammates as the departures of Grady Diangana, Semi Ajayi and John Swift were confirmed.
