Will he be missed?" - Claim made about Wrexham AFC's Ollie Palmer

Ollie Palmer discusses Wrexham’s Championship hopes, names two clubs that can be an inspiration

Wrexham have achieved back-to-back promotions and now want even more under Phil Parkinson.

It’s only just over two years since Wrexham’s lengthy spell in the National League came to an end with a home win over Boreham Wood.June is just around the corner and Wrexham are now preparing for life in the Championship.Phil Parkinson has masterminded three in a row; back-to-back-to-back promotions, firing Wrexham to the second tier in rapid fashion.Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ 2021 takeover has put Wrexham on a remarkable path and the goal is clear – aim for the Premier League. That won’t be easy, especially in a stacked Championship lineup for next season, but nothing is impossible with this Wrexham side.

Ollie Palmer on Wrexham promotion hopes

The idea from this Wrexham rise is ‘why not?’ – why not dream about going from the National League to the Premier League? Why not believe that a team can win four promotions in a row?

Wrexham have achieved three, but the last few seasons will leave some fans with real belief of a fourth straight promotion.

Pundits aren’t so sure; Troy Deeney and Ally McCoist have predicted a mid-table finish for Wrexham, but striker Ollie Palmer is allowing himself to dream.

Speaking to CBS Sports, Palmer admitted that Ipswich Town and Luton Town are giving him hope.

Both Luton and Ipswich quickly rose from League One to the Premier League, albeit suffering relegation after reaching the top flight.

Palmer admitted that four promotions in a row would be unbelievable, and stopped short of predicting such a fate this season.

The Wrexham forward does, though, think it’s at least possible, pointing to the success of Ipswich and Luton, as well as the backing of McElhenney and Reynolds.

“My one debate on that would be Luton… I know to do four is ridiculous and I’m not saying that, I’m just trying to compare,” said Palmer when pundit Nigel Reo-Coker suggested Wrexham won’t go up again.

“If you look at Luton, and Ipswich did it… two amazing clubs, by the way, two fantastic clubs. We’ve got backing where the club wants to go again. I’m not trying to put pressure on the lads or anything like that but, all I’m saying is – I should probably stop talking – all I’m trying to say is we can take inspiration from Luton and Ipswich and the gaffer, the owners are going to invest and improve the squad, there’s no doubt about that.

“If you say that you’re riding the wave… maybe?” he added.

High-profile signings would give Wrexham a chance

Wrexham’s rise has been about the collective unit rather than any particularly flashy signings.

Sure, money has been spent on wages and transfer fees, allowing Wrexham to sign quality players at every level.

Paul Mullin quickly achieved hero status, but Parkinson won’t compromise his approach and will be focused on signing players who fit into the Wrexham culture.

Big names continue to be linked, though, with Wrexham interested in signing Tom Cairney according to reports.

Cairney could leave Fulham on a free transfer this summer and the veteran playmaker is a real option for Wrexham.

Aaron Cresswell is also being linked with Wrexham as the left-back departs West Ham United this summer.

Both Cairney and Cresswell are experienced performers and have the quality to make a big impact in the Championship.

Parkinson is likely to sign some younger players alongside the experience, but adding that proven quality would give Wrexham a real chance to at least challenge for an unprecedented fourth straight promotion.
