The Sheffield Wednesday issue that could affect appointing a Danny Rohl replacement

Sheffield Wednesday news: Danny Rohl exit talk, Dejphon Chansiri sale, Barry Bannan contract

Sheffield Wednesday have suffered a torrid start to the summer transfer window.

The 2024/25 campaign should’ve ended with positivity swirling around Hillsborough, after building upon their relegation battle of the previous season with a 12th-place finish.

However, controversy hasn’t left the blue and white half of the Steel City over the past few months, with managerial uncertainty and missed payments making for a hectic time for those involved with the Owls.

Here we look at all the latest news surrounding Sheffield Wednesday during this tumultuous period…

Danny Rohl exit looms

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl

Danny Rohl hasn’t been shy in his desire to exit Hillsborough this summer, after growing tired of Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.

The 36-year-old had been linked with a move to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, but former Go Ahead Eagles’ manager Paul Simonis was given the nod instead.

Middlesborough are believed to have Rohl on their list of Michael Carrick replacements but, like for Southampton, the German’s compensation fee is proving an issue for Boro.

The release clause was set at £4 million for Premier League clubs, and a bit lower for second-tier teams, as per the Sun.

Both Wednesday and Rohl will hope to come to an amicable divorce soon so both parties can best prepare for next season.

Potential takeover still not gaining traction

Chansiri Out Protest

Not for the first time, Sheffield Wednesday players, coaching staff and individuals behind the scenes were left without full payment come the end of May.

Chansiri’s personal cash flow issues had led to this predicament, with the EFL taking action and charging the club as per the BBC.

A Florida-based consortium fronted by the businessman John Flanagan and Sheffield-born Adam Shaw have made two bids for Wednesday, the first of which was submitted in April and subsequently dismissed by the club as ‘derisory’.

A more improved offer for the club has been rejected once more, and a takeover doesn’t seem any closer despite the harrowing situation Chansiri and Co. find themselves in.

Barry Bannan contract situation unclear

Amid Wednesday’s current financial torment, there are a number of players who still have question marks over their contract situation.

One of those is Barry Bannan, who has made almost 450 appearances for the Owls and at 35 years of age continues to feature

prominently in the Sheffield Wednesday starting 11.

According to the Sheffield Star, the EFL may choose to reject the registration of players whose contracts need to be extended beyond the end of June, with the Scottish midfielder still in negotiations with the club over a new deal.
