Serious crash into Colchester shop on Magdalen Street
We send our deepest condolences to the loved ones of those involved
Before we end our live coverage of today’s tragedy, it is only right we pay tribute to the four people who were killed in this morning’s car crash.
We will continue to report about what happened as sensitively as possible when we provide updates on the incident tomorrow.
Car involved in crash was ‘unrecognisable’ when it was pulled from wreckage
Residents in Magdalen Street have said the car involved in the collision was ‘unrecognisable’ when police hauled it from the wreckage on Saturday morning.
Alan Bolster, 44, said: “We saw the police with the car in a big wooden box they had constructed around it.
“Later in the day a lorry came along with a crane on the back.
“When the car was put onto that, I could see the car was a complete wreck to the extent I could not see what type of car it was.
“It was absolutely unrecognisable.”
Police have no confirmed four people have died following this morning’s crash on Magdalen Street.
An Essex Police spokesman said: “Four people have died following a collision in Colchester early this morning.
“We were called shortly before 4.40am today (Saturday February 1) to reports a vehicle had been in collision with a building in Magdalen Street.
“Emergency services attended but, sadly, four people died at the scene.
“Their families have been informed and will be supported by specialist officers.
“The road has been closed for much of the day while the vehicle was recovered and we carried out enquiries.”
An Essex Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “We were called to a road traffic collision in Magdalen Street, Colchester today at 4.42am.
“A car had left the road and was in collision with a building. Crews from Colchester, Coggeshall and our Urban Search and Rescue team assisted Essex Police and the Ambulance Service.
Tracey Pool said: “It woke me up about 4.30am and it looks like a car crashed into the crossing outside Aldi then ploughed into Dusty’s.
“It was seriously loud, I’m impressed how quickly police and fire turned up.”
After the incident, black sheets were put up around the scene outside Dusty’s second-hand shop.
We are waiting for a further update from East of England Ambulance Service.
