Predicting Wrexham’s contract decisions as Phil Parkinson plans for the Championship

Wrexham are beginning plans for life in the Championship, with Phil Parkinson looking to keep the club’s incredible rise going.

Wrexham beat Charlton Athletic 3-0 to secure promotion to the Championship with one game to spare.

Phil Parkinson has now clinched three promotions in a row, and planning for next season can truly begin.

Wrexham players are now in Las Vegas but Parkinson’s retained list will surely be released any time soon.

Wrexham don’t have too many contract decisions to make this summer, but here are our predictions for how Parkinson will handle those players who are poised to become free agents.

Wrexham out of contract stars: stay or go?

Liam Hall

Wrexham decided to keep Liam Hall last summer, but the 20-year-old has yet to make a first-team breakthrough at the STōK Cae Ras.

Hall’s hopes of a deal may well hinge on the next man on this list, as it’s difficult to see Wrexham extending the deals of both Hall and Brad Foster.

Verdict: Released

Brad Foster

Wrexham signed Brad Foster on a free transfer midway through the League One season after injuries to Arthur Okonkwo and Callum Burton.

Foster featured in the EFL Trophy win over Crewe Alexandra and we can see Wrexham preferring to activate the one-year option on his contract over keeping Hall.

Verdict: One-year option activated

Mark Howard

Another goalkeeper on the list, Mark Howard stepped up when Okonkwo and Burton went down with injury.

‘Chomp’ is 38 now, but has proven that he can be Wrexham’s third-choice stopper without any qualms – and he will surely keep that role as long as he has no plans to retire.

Verdict: New one-year contract

Possibly the toughest prediction on this list surrounds former Manchester City talent Josh Adam.

Wrexham signed Adam on a free transfer in September after the Scottish midfielder impressed on trial.

We only briefly saw Adam in EFL Trophy action and Wrexham may fancy keeping hold of the midfielder to allow him more time to develop.

Verdict: One-year option activated

Steven Fletcher

If there is anybody on this list we would love to see stay, it’s Steven Fletcher.

The veteran forward made an enormous impact off the bench in League One and few would doubt him in the Championship.

Fletcher has hinted at wanting to continue his playing career and Wrexham will surely oblige with a new deal.

Verdict: New one-year contract

Eoghan O’Connell – the wildcard

One player has become the player to watch when Wrexham’s retained list emerges.

Transfermarkt claim that defender Eoghan O’Connell is out of contract this summer and could leave for nothing.

Wrexham did not announce a contract length when O’Connell departed Charlton Athletic for the STōK Cae Ras.

O’Connell has been a vital part of Parkinson’s side ever since signing and was a rock in the Wrexham back line for most of the League One season.

That neither Parkinson nor O’Connell have even mentioned the prospect of his contract expiring makes us believe there is no concern here.

We would not be surprised if Wrexham had already activated a one-year option on O’Connell, with the Irishman surely set to stay at the STōK Cae Ras no matter what.

Grading Wrexham’s 2024-25 signings as Phil Parkinson’s brilliant recruitment inspires another promotion

Wrexham’s stay in League One has already come to an end after Phil Parkinson secured yet another promotion.

Back-to-back promotions saw Wrexham rapidly rise from the National League to League One.

Phil Parkinson has now taken Wrexham another step forward, immediately securing promotion to the Championship.

Wrexham’s outstanding recruitment has been a driving force, with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds funding some impressive signings.

Here, we grade every signing Wrexham have made since winning promotion from League Two.

Arthur Okonkwo

Wrexham’s first summer signing was arguably the biggest.

Arthur Okonkwo excelled on loan at Wrexham and appeared to be a man in demand as his Arsenal contract ended.

Wrexham managed to pull off a permanent deal, marking an enormous coup for Parkinson.

Andy Morrell didn’t think a deal for Okonkwo was possible, and we also had our doubts, given Okonkwo’s brilliant performances and huge potential.

Okonkwo has lived up to the billing, racking up 19 clean sheets in 33 League One appearances.

Parkinson dropped Okonkwo for a brief period after returning from injury out of form, but he ended the season as Wrexham’s first-choice stopper and arguably the best in League One.
