Forget Harry Ashfield, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney must agree new contract for another Wrexham star with time running out
Wrexham will already be planning for next season whether that is in League One or the Championship.
Phil Parkinson’s side have put themselves in a great position to be promoted and Paul Merson favours Wrexham’s fixtures with rivals Wycombe having a tough run in on paper.
Off the field, Wrexham have announced record financial figures with an incredible £27m turnover largely thanks to the success of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ tv documentary.
In addition, Wrexham agreed a new contract with Harry Ashfield with the academy graduate committing his future to the club for another two years. There is another contract that needs sorting however, one for a player who has had an impressive season.
Eoghan O’Connell’s Wrexham contract expires in June 2025
Wrexham’s recent run of good form has been based on their incredible defensive efforts, they have kept five clean sheets in their last six games.
Eoghan O’Connell has been one of League One’s best players and the defender has been involved in 36 appearances in all competitions for the Red Dragons this season.
O’Connell’s contract at the club expires in June 2025, meaning he can currently negotiate a move away from Wrexham on a free transfer.
The 29-year-old Irish defender has been colossal at the back for Parkinson this season and it would be a huge mistake to let him go regardless of what division Wrexham end up in.
O’Connell recovered from bad spell to become Wrexham leader
There were calls for the defender to be dropped earlier in the season, O’Connell had a nightmare against Shrewsbury Town and also made a high-profile mistake away at Barnsley.
However, O’Connell was a huge factor in Wrexham’s record 2024 where they conceded the lowest amount in the EFL for the calendar year and have continued to excel in keeping clean sheets.

In the recent absence of James McClean, O’Connell took the armband for Wrexham and his aerial dominance alongside his sheer determination to win has been a real driving force behind the team’s run of good form.
At 29, O’Connell has many good years still ahead of him and has proven this season that should Wrexham claim promotion he is good enough to make that step up with them, a new deal for him is vital.
