Luton announce signing of former Millwall midfielder George Saville

Luton Town have announced the signing of George Saville, who will join on a free transfer from Millwall.

Saville will join Luton when his Millwall contract expires at the end of June, with the 32-year-old Northern Irish international signing a deal of undisclosed length at Kenilworth Road.

The news sees Saville become Luton’s second signing in as many days, with the League One club having also announced the signing of Kal Naismith on a free from Bristol City this week.

The midfielder had been a regular for the London-based club in the just-concluded season, making 45 league appearances for a Lions team that finished 8th in the Championship and just missed out on a place in the play-offs.

Saville had been with Millwall for four seasons, having joined the Londoners for a second spell at The Den following a spell with Middlesbrough in 2021. The midfielder began his career with Chelsea, while he had also played for Wolves, Bristol City and Brentford.

Luton boss Matt Bloomfield told the club’s official website that Saville rejected offers to stay in the Championship to make the move to Kenilworth Road, and that he saw the arrival as a big piece of business ahead of the new season.

He said, “We’re really pleased to sign George not just because of the experience and quality he’ll bring, but because he’s really enthused about the challenge that lies ahead.

“He’s chosen us over some Championship offers which shows his belief in our club, and that’s the type of character we’re after.

“A tactically astute defensive midfielder and a player who can influence those around him, we’re hoping George can help us with his leadership and ability to knit the game together in the middle of the pitch.

“He’s going to be an important component of the squad as we start to mould the group for what we need next season, and I’m extremely happy to have got this first piece of important business over the line already.”

Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski is rumoured to have received firm offers from both Greece Super League side Aris Saloniki and Belgian Pro League club RSC Anderlecht to leave Kenilworth Road and join them in the summer transfer window.

The 32-year-old has played for Anderlecht before in his career, signing for Les Mauve et Blanc from fellow Belgian side Oud-Heverlee Leuven over a decade ago in August 2012. He went on to play 22 times in four years while at Lotto Park, conceding just 20 goals and keeping 10 clean sheets, also having loan spells in Cyprus with Anorthosis and Danish team FC Copenhagen.

On leaving Anderlecht back in 2016, Kaminski remained in his home country, with stints at both Kortrijk and Gent, before moving to England as he signed for Blackburn Rovers in 2020 and then headed to Luton two years ago when the Hatters won promotion to the Premier League. Managed by Besnik Hasi, the 34-times champions finished fourth in the table last term, with a return home believed to be Kaminski’s first choice if he, as expected, departs Bedfordshire in the coming weeks.

However, the popular Town stopper, who has made 85 appearances for Luton, interesting another Belgian side in Standard Liege too, is also wanted by Aris, after they came fifth in their division last season, 18 points behind champions Olympiacos. Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri wrote on X: “Beside RSC Anderlecht, Thomas Kaminski has also a concrete offer from Aris Saloniki. Kaminski give his preference to Mauve side who’s expected to meet his personal terms. Belgian goalkeeper keen to come back in #JPL… Talks ongoing.”
