Wrexham should follow up their pursuit of Sheffield Wednesday star Barry Bannan by targeting one teammate who could fancy a move.
Wrexham have shown a vast interest in several players as they look to prepare for the 2025/26 Championship season.
There has been a clear trend with the players who have been targeted by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney this summer, and that is vast experience at either Premier League or Championship level.
The feeling amongst the Wrexham camp is that they are not there just to simply take part next season because of their vast aspirations to continue their incredible trajectory of three successive promotions.
As a result, one Championship star Wrexham have targeted is Barry Bannan. The Welsh side may not stop there, though, as they could potentially capitalise on Sheffield Wednesday’s dire financial issues to bring in extra proven Championship talent.

Wrexham should target Sheffield Wednesday star Callum Paterson alongside Barry Bannan this summer
Across the border, Sheffield Wednesday have undergone vast financial issues this summer as owner Dejphon Chansiri continues to keep up with payments to both staff and players. This is why Wrexham may make progress to sign Bannan, with the Scotsman yet to tie down a deal at Hillsborough.
It is no surprise that, similarly to Tom Cairney with Fulham, Bannan has desires to continue his stay at Sheffield Wednesday, but his uncertainty surrounding his contract could lead him on the route to Wales.
If Wrexham were successful in bringing Bannan through the doors, they could easily follow it up by signing fellow Scotsman Callum Paterson from the Championship side. Whilst Paterson had an extra year triggered on his contract, his head could still be turned amid uncertainties with his pay, especially if Wrexham were to offer a healthy wage to the man with 17 caps for Scotland.

What Callum Paterson would offer Phil Parkinson
Paterson is a unique player in many ways and would be perfect to add to Phil Parkinson’s side.
Whilst it wouldn’t be a guarantee that he would start week in week out for Wrexham, Paterson is a brilliant asset to bring off the bench, whether they are chasing a lead or seeing out a game.
The Sheffield Wednesday star is bulldog-esque with his approach, always guaranteeing his teammates that he will give 100%, chase every ball and offer a strong presence, whether utilised up front or in midfield.
As utility players go, they don’t get much better at this level than Paterson, and it is an avenue that Wrexham should certainly explore.
Next Wrexham target should be obvious to Phil Parkinson, 44-goal Championship man wants a move
Wrexham should be all over the hunt for one former Championship striker who is demanding a move this summer.
Wrexham are targeting several strikers ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season as they prepare for the biggest step up in quality between divisions in the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney era.
The current crop of attackers have been deemed not to be quite up to scratch to compete at the top level of the Championship, with Steven Fletcher departing Wrexham, whilst Paul Mullin could follow him to the departure lounge.
As a result, several strikers have been targeted. Notably, Wrexham have been linked with Premier League forward Danny Ings; a clear sign of intent from the owners ahead of the task of the Championship.
In the current market of attackers, it is surprising that one name in particular hasn’t been linked to Wrexham, especially considering his desires to return to the Championship.

With Wrexham showing clear ambition to bring in a striker this summer who has proven ability at Championship or even Premier League level, it would be no surprise if they turned their attentions towards former Sheffield United man Oli McBurnie.
McBurnie is weighing up plenty of interest from Championship sides, including Sheffield United, Hull City and fellow promoted side Birmingham City. It is no surprise to see the man with 44 Championship goals in his career weighing up plenty of suitors.
The Scotsman could provide an impact and style of play similar to Ollie Palmer or Steven Fletcher as a bruising and towering forward with a huge presence and clear goalscoring ability.

One reason why a move for Oli McBurnie could be significantly hindered
On the surface, a move for McBurnie fits all parties. Wrexham want to bring in a Championship-proven goalscorer, whilst McBurnie intends on returning to the English second tier following his spell in Spain with Las Palmas.
However, such a move could potentially be affected by McBurnie’s allegiances with Swansea City, whom he played for on 62 occasions.
McBurnie has recently expressed his love for the Swans, to the point where he has previously been spotted in away ends following Swansea City.
Such affections for a previous club will likely have an effect on whether Wrexham could be successful in negotiations. On one hand, McBurnie may be keen to return to Wales, but he might value his links with Swansea so highly that he doesn’t intend on a move to a fellow Welsh side.
Nonetheless, gunning for such a proven striker makes sense for Wrexham ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season.
