‘Who is going to succeed him?’: Wes Morgan says Leicester City too reliant on one player, thinks its time to find replacement

Leicester City suffered yet another Premier League defeat. This time at the hands of Brentford, who travelled to the King Power and took all three points.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side are favourites to be relegated alongside Ipswich Town and Southampton, but with 12 games to play and still just two points from safety, anything can happen.

The clock is ticking though, and after Leicester City broke an unwanted Premier League record, they will need to put their goal drought behind them and start picking up points.

Former captain Wes Morgan thinks that could be easier said than done, though due to the Foxes’ failure to replace one long-serving player.

Wes Morgan thinks Leicester City too reliant on Jamie Vardy

Having played, and lifted the title, with him, Morgan knows Jamie Vardy very well. The pair shared the Leicester City dressing room for nine years from 2012-2021.

Despite Vardy being the Foxes’ most iconic player, Morgan feels it’s time his old club looks to the future.

“I know he’s got that body type and that hunger to keep going and going and going, but at the same time, who is going to succeed him? – Who is putting that pressure on him?” he told Sky Sports.

Vardy, who turned 38 last month, has started 23 of Leicester City’s 26 Premier League matches this season — evidence of Van Nistelrooy’s over-reliance.

Options limited

With Patson Daka, Leicester City’s only other permanent outright striker, Van Nistelrooy’s striking options are very limited. Odsonne Edouard is on loan from Crystal Palace but has failed to score in any of his first six appearances.

Vardy’s longevity and reliance make him the better pick, and that is worrying for Leicester City. The former England international is one of the oldest players in the league and way past his prime.

However, it is no surprise that a striker wasn’t signed in the January transfer window when the side’s future is so uncertain.

Looking to the future will have to wait until the end of the season when the club know what division they’ll be playing in — until then, no player is going to offer their services and push for a move to the King Power.
