Sheffield Wednesday must take valuable lesson from Plymouth Argyle amid Danny Rohl uncertainty
It’s been a pretty bad week for both Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle fans, but one club has remedied a negative situation very effectively, while the other is allowing it to linger.
Having been relegated from the Championship, it was always going to be a fairly difficult summer for Plymouth Argyle
The South Coast club are expected to lose top players like Ryan Hardie and Maksym Talovierov, while Miron Muslic very quickly gave his reputation a boost in the second half of the season.
Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday are in financial trouble once again, with Dejphon Chansiri failing to pay his players and staff for May.
That adds to the growing concern around the future of Danny Rohl, who appears determined to facilitate an exit from Hillsborough for pastures new this summer.
Sheffield Wednesday refuse to budge on Danny Rohl
While Rohl has been linked with Leicester City and Southampton for a long time now, it is thought he would prefer to head home to Germany this summer.
Just a few days ago, it was reported that Werder Bremen were ready to pay Rohl’s release clause and bring him back to the Bundesliga.
However, that fell through as the release clause proved prohibitive once again, meaning Rohl now faces a huge decision.
Does the young coach walk away from Sheffield Wednesday and make himself a free agent? One thing is for sure, the club are not about to sack him to make things easier.
Either way, Rohl has created a ‘messy’ situation at Wednesday, and the fans are not too happy about it.
There is something that can be done to make all this smoother, though. The only problem is, it will require Chansiri to do something he has never done before: Make a compromise.
Plymouth Argyle handled Miron Muslic issue swiftly
Chansiri only has to look at Plymouth as a prime example of how a very frustrating and negative situation can be swiftly dealt with to minimise the impact on the club.
Muslic confirmed his move to Germany this weekend, leaving fans fuming at his apparent eagerness to jump ship and escape the relegated club.
Plymouth’s chairman, Simon Hallett, has slammed Muslic for the way he engineered this exit. The former Argyle boss had previously told the club’s hierarchy he was committed to the cause, only to change his mind shortly after without warning.
It’s a far from ideal situation for Plymouth, who are favourites to win promotion from League One next season regardless. The club handled the situation with pragmatism and efficiency, though — something the Owls must take note of.
Instead of forcing a wantaway manager to stay put and refusing to negotiate with suitors over a compensation fee, Hallett and co. struck a deal that would end the debacle swiftly and still bring them in a suitable financial package.
Given Sheffield Wednesday’s very clear financial problems, it would surely be prudent for Chansiri to find a similar solution to Rohl’s situation. He may not get the full £5m release fee in Rohl’s contract, but at this point, any fee may be better than the alternatives of having a miserable manager or one who walks out on the club entirely.
